The generalist

The bachelor’s programme is based on the principle that newly educated police officers shall be generalists, cf. Report no. 42 to the Norway’s National Assembly, the Storting (2004-2005), and Proposition no. 145 to the Storting (2005-2006).

A generalist is a police officer with a foundation consisting of basic knowledge of and practical skills in crime prevention, crime fighting, and law enforcement. Moreover, a generalist shall have the necessary competence to make thorough assessments of a variety of situations, be able to view his or her work in a broader social perspective, and seek assistance from experts with relevant competence and other collaborators whenever the situation requires this.

Finally, a generalist shall have developed a foundation for further training and personal development through active policing.
